A Life Well Lived - Personal Responsibility
Many factors play a part in how you live your life and not all of them are under your control.
However, how you choose to react to them is. Whether it is while you are still on the earth plane or after you have returned to Spirit, there will come a time when you have to accept responsibility for the reactions that occur as a result of your actions.
Is there an afterlife?
It is a common misconception to talk about an 'afterlife'. It would be more accurate to describe your time on the earth plane as an 'in between life' - you came to the earth from Spirit and you will return to Spirit when this earthly life is finished. The Spirit may or may not have more experiences on earth in the future. See (Re-incarnation And Your Purpose For This Earthly Life) Your reason for coming to the earth plane is to have a life experience. The way that a life is lived is the decision and responsibility of the person living it. This is called free will and without it there would be very little purpose in having an earthly life experience.

How you treat other people is your choice

How you react to any given situation is your choice

How well or badly you treat the body you are occupying is your choice
When you return to Spirit you will review this life when it is appropriate to do so. You will experience the impact that the choices you made had on others. You will understand the positive things that you did and you will also understand the negative impact that you sometimes had. In order that your Spirit may continue it's progression within the Spirit World, you will have the opportunity to work to correct what you got wrong.
What is Karma?
This is often known as Karma. Karma is always worked through while in Spirit, never while on the earth plane. To return for another earthly life in order to experience a misdeed you committed in a previous earthly experience would be counter productive and would merely perpetuate the wrong doing, not correct it.
This information is not intended to frighten or alarm in any way. It is intended to give you the opportunity to make the best decisions you can during what is left of your time on the earth plane in the knowledge that those decisions do matter.
It is also so that you will understand that people who appear to have "got away" with not having to make retribution for something whilst on the earth plane cannot avoid dealing with the matter on returning to Spirit. See also Heaven And Hell Explained.
Remember that you are occupying a human body, living a human life in an imperfect world. Even if you have chosen to walk a Spiritual path, perfection is neither expected nor attainable. All that is required is that you do the best that you can.
